Two legal traditions, one country
A High Court judgment from Bamenda speaks the language of common law: plaintiff, defendant, orders, “it is hereby ordered”. A tribunal de première instance in Douala speaks the civil law of attendu que and par ces motifs. Translating one into the other is not a matter of vocabulary lists: where two notions do not quite overlap, the translation says so instead of hiding the gap.
Recitals are translated in full, never summarised — it is the whole text that gets certified. Registry stamps, revenue stamps and enrolment numbers are described where they sit, because they are what show the decision is final.

The judgment behind the certificate
When a birth was declared late, the certificate in your file may rest on a declaratory judgment. If the checklist asks for both, both are translated, carrying the same names, dates and references. The same goes for a divorce: the marriage certificate records the union, the decree its end. Notarial deeds — and what we are not

Frequently asked questions
What is a declaratory judgment, and why does my file mention one?
It is the court decision that orders a birth or death to be registered after the legal deadline. Since Law No. 2024/016 of 23 December 2024 it is called a jugement déclaratif; older decisions usually bear the name jugement supplétif, which the new law keeps for replacing an annulled or provisional record. We translate the whole decision, court heading, reasoning and ruling included, under the name it bears, and show plainly that it is a judgment.
Can you translate a divorce decree for a remarriage or immigration file?
Yes. The officer needs to confirm that the previous marriage was dissolved, and when. The operative part — who divorced whom, on what date, with what effect — is translated word for word, never summarised.
Is the translation itself a legal document?
It is a certified rendering of the original: every page carries a signed and stamped statement of accuracy. It does not replace the judgment and it is not a new ruling. It lets an authority that does not read the original language act on the decision your court already made.
